Africanist from the University of Warsaw visiting Bayero University in Kano

On August 22-29, 2022, Patryk Zając, MA from the Chair of African Languages ​​and Cultures, visited the Center for Research in Nigerian Languages, Translation and Folklore at Bayero University in Kano (Nigeria) at the invitation of its head, Prof. Yakubu Magaji Azare. The visit was carried out under a bilateral agreement between the University of Warsaw and the University of Bayero in Kano. During the stay, i.a. he presented part of his research during his doctoral project on proverbs in Hausa. The presentation of the Hausa-Polish dictionary of proverbs has been appreciated by Nigerian researchers. In addition, Patryk Zając conducted a survey on the situational and contextual use of Hausa proverbs with courtesy and with the participation of students and staff of Bayero University and the Aminu Kano College of Legal and Islamic Studies. The project was co-financed under the micro-grants program of the Faculty of Oriental Studies, University of Warsaw and internal grants of the University. On August 26, 2022, Patryk Zając took part in the celebrations on the occasion of the International Hausa Language Day organized at Aminu Kano College of Legal and Islamic Studies, during which he gave a short speech in Hausa. On the last day of his stay in Kano Patryk Zając had the honor of meeting with the Vice-Chancellor of the Bayero University, Prof. Sagir Adamu Abbas and the management of the University, during which the many years of friendly relations between the Polish and Nigerian university were discussed, and the willingness to develop them was declared.
