Africanists from the University of Warsaw at the SyWAL 2022 conference in Naples

Three Africanists affiliated to the Chair of African Languages and Cultures of the University of Warsaw took part in the 4th Symposium on West African Languages (SyWAL2022) – ‘Uniformity, Variability, Diversity’, which took place on September 21-23, 2022 in Naples (Italy). The conference gathered numerous academians working on West African languages who represented European, African and American research centers. Dozens of papers on various topics were delivered and accompanied by long discussions on the forum and in the lobby. Prof. Nina Pawlak presented the topic “Metaphorical extensions of Hausa verbs in phrasal expressions”, Dr. Olga Frąckiewicz – “West African conceptualization depicted in Nigerian Pidgin English proverbs” and Patryk Zając (M.A.) spoke on “Hausa phrasal expressions containing culture key words ruwa ‘water’, wuta ‘fire’, rana ‘1. sun, 2. day’ and inuwa ‘shadow’ as exponents of linguistic worldview ”. The topics of researchers from the University of Warsaw were appreciated by the participants of the symposium.
